Vietnam

Vietnamese dubbing and localization.

Vietnamese is tonal, which means pitch is doing grammatical work before it does any emotional work. That single fact shapes casting, direction and what a performance can do.

Pitch is already spoken for.

Change the tone and you change the word, not the emotion.

  • Pace
  • Volume
  • Breath
  • Timbre
  • Articulation

An English-style pitch swoop for shock can produce a different word entirely. English actors use pitch freely. Vietnamese performers find emotional range elsewhere, which a client comparing takes against an English reference cannot hear. An inexperienced performer may sound tonally correct but flat, or expressive but subtly wrong. Dubbing QC checks both, with a native reviewer independent of the performer.

Northern and southern.

They differ in pronunciation, some vocabulary and tone realization, and audiences identify them instantly. We cast for northern or southern Vietnamese, decided before casting by where your audience is.

Diacritics that cannot be dropped.

Vietnamese uses Latin script with dense diacritics marking vowel quality and tone. Stripped or mangled diacritics, common in workflows not configured for them, change words. We verify character encoding during subtitling QC.

Frequently
Asked Questions.

Why is tonality a problem for dubbing?
Because pitch distinguishes words in Vietnamese, so it is not freely available for emotional expression the way it is in English. Performers convey emotion through pace, volume, breath and timbre instead, which is why casting experienced performers matters more here than in most languages.
Northern or southern Vietnamese?
They differ in pronunciation, vocabulary and tone realization, and audiences identify them immediately. The choice follows where your audience is and is made before casting.
Do you handle Vietnamese diacritics in subtitles?
Yes, and it is verified rather than assumed. Vietnamese diacritics mark both vowel quality and tone, so stripping them changes words rather than just appearance. Encoding is checked during subtitling QC.
Do you do full dubbing or voice-over narration?
Both. Vietnamese localization has historically used single-narrator voice-over for some content, and full dubbing is increasingly expected. We will recommend which suits your content and audience.
