French dubbing and localization.

France has one of the oldest and most established dubbing traditions in the world, with conventions audiences have internalised over decades. Meeting them is largely a matter of knowing what they are.

Length, in a market that will not forgive it.

French runs meaningfully longer than English, and French audiences have decades of well-made dubs as their reference. So the usual workarounds show. Compressed meaning feels thin. A sped-up read sounds hurried. A line running past the mouth movement is noticed at once. What works is adaptation: rewriting the line to mean the same in fewer syllables. It is slower, and it is why a good French dub costs what it costs.

European or Canadian.

The two differ in accent, vocabulary and idiom, and audiences notice. We cast to either.

  • European French

Cast and directed as its own variety.

  • Canadian French

Including Québécois where the content calls for it. Québécois content is often dubbed separately for exactly this reason.

If Canada is a meaningful market, make it a separate decision, not an assumption.

tu and vous.

The choice marks formality and intimacy, and the moment characters move from vous to tu carries meaning in French exactly as it does in Korean or Hindi. It is mapped per character pair at script stage.

Frequently
Asked Questions.

Why does French dubbing take longer to adapt?
Because French runs longer than English and the market will not accept the shortcuts. Compressed meaning reads as thin, a rushed performance is audible, and overrunning the mouth movement is noticed. Proper adaptation means rewriting to fewer syllables, which is a writing task rather than a translation one.
European French or Canadian French?
They differ enough in accent, vocabulary and idiom that audiences notice, and Québécois content is often dubbed separately. If Canada matters to you it is a separate track and a separate decision.
Does French cover African markets?
French-language content reaches francophone Africa, and a European French track is generally accepted there. Where a project specifically targets those audiences, casting can reflect it, tell us and we will scope it.
How do you handle tu and vous?
Mapped per character pair at script stage, with the shifts marked. The move from vous to tu carries meaning and is treated as a story beat rather than a translation preference.
