Thailand

Thai dubbing and localization.

Thai is tonal like Vietnamese, but adds a pronoun system that encodes social position on every line and a writing system that does not put spaces between words. Each of those breaks a different part of a standard workflow.

Pronouns place everyone.

Thai pronouns and sentence-final particles encode what English does not. There is no neutral option.

  • Gender

    The speaker's gender.

  • Status

The speaker's status relative to the listener.

  • Setting and deference

How formal the setting is, and how deferential the speaker is being.

One safe mid-register set for every character makes a senior figure and a young stranger sound identical, which reads as strange or rude. The choices also shift when relationships change. We map them per character pair and hold them across a series.

Pitch carries meaning.

As in Vietnamese, pitch does lexical work before emotional work.

  • Pace
  • Volume
  • Breath
  • Articulation

Same syllable, different pitch, different word. Emotion comes from elsewhere. That is why we cast experienced performers, and dubbing QC is done by a native reviewer independent of the performer.

Where does the line break?

Thai puts spaces between phrases and sentences, not words.

Frequently
Asked Questions.

How do you handle Thai pronouns and politeness particles?
Mapped per character pair before translation and held across the series. Thai pronouns encode gender, relative status and formality on every line, so a uniform mid-register choice makes characters of very different standing sound identical.
Why do Thai subtitles break incorrectly so often?
Because Thai does not use spaces between words, so tools built for space-delimited languages break lines mid-word. Correct Thai subtitling needs word-boundary awareness rather than a character count, and it is checked during subtitling QC.
Does tonality limit performance?
It redirects it. Pitch distinguishes words, so emotional range comes through pace, volume, breath and articulation instead. Experienced Thai performers do this naturally; inexperienced ones tend to be either flat or tonally inaccurate.
Can you match casting across a long Thai series?
Yes. Casting is confirmed for the projected run before the first session, and the pronoun and register map is held by the same reviewers throughout.
